Captive Bead Ring: Captive bead rings are rings with a gap that is a fraction smaller then the diameter of the accompanying bead. The bead may be made of steel, titanium, semi-precious stones, acrylic, or gold. This is the most popular design, due to its simplicity and cost. How do I take the bead in and out?
Barbell:Barbells are an alternative to captive bead rings when a straight piece is required for tongue, nipple, or ear project piercings. Internally threaded (threading on the ball) are superior to externally threaded designs (threading on the bar).
Curved Barbell: Curved barbells are similar to barbells, but are bent to accommodate areas which have less of a defined ridge to hold a straight barbell. Such areas are navels, eyebrows, lips, and some genital piercings.
Circular Barbell: Circular barbells are similar to captives and may be used in place of them. Circular barbells have the same mechanical properties as barbells. This design is an attractive alternative to more basic jewelry. It should also be noted that this design is easier to change than captive bead rings.
Seamless Ring: Seamless rings are ideal when a bead is not desired. Unfortunatley, seamless rings are not recommended for most piercings as the gap may rotate into the piercing, thus irritating it.
Fishtail: The fishtail is priamarily used on the labret or lip piercing. The tail of the jewelry rests on the inside of the gum line. The fishtail is adjusted to suit the individuals jaw. This design is often more comfortable in an initial piercing because it reduces the amount of pressure associated with other designs.
Flatback: the flatback is similar to the barbell in design. The flat disc and bead are threaded onto the jewelry. This design is usually best suited for healed labret or lip piercings, although it may be used in the earlobe or cartiladge. As with barbells, it is suggested that the flatback be internally threaded to reduce the discomfort when insereting and removing jewelry.
Nostril Screw: The nostril screw is used when the look of a stud is desired. The bottom loop of the nostril screw sits flat on the inside of the nostril, making it comfortable for an intial piercing.
Septum Retainer: This design is used for the septum piercing. This design is suggested for the intial piercing because it is able to be flipped up into the nose and concelaed from view. This design also reduces the amount of external irritation the piercing may receive.
